Surgery of the nose generally involves removing excess from the nasal dorsum, narrowing the nasal bones, and correcting a variety of tip problems.
Is Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) Covered by Insurance?
Most of this surgery is considered cosmetic and there will not be insurance coverage. Frequently, rhinoplasty is performed through incisions on the inside of the nose and that is an endonasal approach. If the external nose is deviated, twisted, or requires cartilage grafts, an open procedure may be indicated. Rhinoplasty requires injections inside the nose and is usually performed under general anesthesia.
How Long Does Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) Take?
This surgery takes approximately one hour for a routine case but can take longer for complex problems. If the bony nose has been narrowed, a plastic splint is placed over the nasal dorsum and left in place for one week. Bruising of the eyes and swelling of the nasal tip occur frequently. Final resolution of swelling and tip shape can take up to a year although this can be completed in 2-3 months.
Incisions are placed within the nose only and this works well for uncomplicated nasal surgery. Most rhinoplasty can be performed with this technique. The nasal dorsum or hump can be modified for a better profile. The bony nasal triangle can be narrowed. The tip cartilage can be modified or narrowed. Absorbable sutures are used and are not necessary to remove as they will fall out. This technique will not be used for the nasal deformity resulting from severe trauma or when cartilage grafts are felt to be necessary for repair.
This approach uses a small incision through the columella between the lip and nasal tip. This approach allows direct visualization of the nasal structure and better correction of complex problems. The small incision is closed with a few fine sutures and is usually not very visible when completely healed. The advantage with this approach is direct visualization of the underlying structure to be repaired. The recovery is identical to the endonasal procedure. The few external sutures will be removed one week after surgery.
