Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Volume of the breast is usually reduced to a "C" cup size. The nipple is elevated to a higher, correct position. Excess skin is removed to accommodate the smaller volume. This changes the breast to a more normal appearance. Breast feeding is not possible after this operation. Nipple sensation may be lost permanently. An attempt is made to save sensation but it is difficult to determine until the patient is completely recovered and several months have passed. The incision pattern is determined by the amount of tissue removed and distance to elevate the nipple.
