Male breast tissue is not uncommon but when there is too much of this tissue it can be an embarrassment. This tissue is a combination of true breast tissue and fat. Fat tissue can be removed with liposuction but this would leave behind the remaining breast tissue producing a strange appearance. Liposuction is very helpful to feather the edges of the tissue around the gynecomastia. Most commonly, an incision is then made at the edge of the areola from 3:00 through 6:00 to 9:00. This allows direct removal of the remaining fibrous breast tissue. The patient is then placed in a compression vest. A drain may be placed on each side and is removed in a few days. Sutures are removed at one week. Normal activity can be resumed at one week and strenuous activity at 3 weeks.
How Long Does Gynecomastia Take?
The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately two hours. The patient is allowed to return home after recovery from anesthesia.
